first kiss…

10
Hi5

did you manage to watch Playful Kiss (yea, aka Mischievous Kiss aka Naughty Kiss) tonight?

a few of us gals from the forum went to one of the gals’ home to watch the first epi together. we were lucky, and managed to watch the entire epi rather smoothly! haha, all of us were surprised at how smoothly it had gone.

we’d watched with TVants via MBC Andong. for more details on how to watch, check out THIS THREAD.

if you’d watched it, how did you like it?

did the opening scene take you by surprise? yea, they’d kissed so early…!!! right at the beginning of the epi, albeit thanks to hani’s dreams…

well, guess you all should know how strong the netizens’ are over there in korea, and how wired up the entire society is, so it’s inevitable that online response is quick and that the media would be just as quick to cover the response.

our dear ODE has helped to do the english translation for these reports. click HERE for the chitchat and voices on wuri hyun joong’s portrayal of baek seung jo in the drama.

and… there’s also reaction and response to jung so min‘s acting too. they’re mostly positive and most seem happy that she has not gone over the top and given us an irritating portray of hani. click HERE to read.

personally, i think it’s too early to tell if he’s made significant improvements for this role. for the first part of the first epi, he hardly had lines! and this character is cold, standoffish and the first part just involved him walking around, buying drinks and being nonchalantly sarcastic.

for what’s worth, and here’s me trying my utmost to be objective and impartial, i do think he’s improved quite abit. to be fair, i really did see a different character and personality in baek seung jo versus yoon jihoo. me thinks whoever thinks he was the same for both roles must either be blind, or deliberately trying to nitpick.

i think there’re TWO issues to explore here. one is whether wuri hyun joong had the ability to play out the role of baek seung jo entirely different from how he had tried to portray yoon jihoo. if he had been the same for both characters, then i guess we can only conclude that he is a one-dimensional actor… so far.

in my mind, the answer to this question (so far) is yes, he had portrayed baek seung jo’s role differently from in BOF. so yea, i think at least he’s shown that he’s capable of playing more than just a handsome rich boy moping around all the time when he’s not sleeping or playing violin in the woods.

the second issue to explore would be… assuming he’s more than just a one-dimensional actor, then is he fleshing out the role adequately? i reserve my comments for now, coz i honestly think it’s too early to say much conclusively. but i’ll give you this, it’s good enough for me for now.

what about you? what do you think of his first outing tonight?

have you heard about the ‘bad’ news? think the chinese sites and a few fanblogs have reported it, and some fans are going a wee bit buts over it. i’d first read about it on BAIDU, and then sorta got ‘confirmation’ from a fellow BYJ fan’s blog HERE.

are you quite ready? braced yourself enough for the devastating news?

The King of Baking, Kim Tak Gu; 44.84%
My Girlfriend is a Nine Tailed Fox; 11.19%
Mischievous Kiss; 3.31%

suehan had further added that she’s gotten the info from MBC’s Drama Gallery, and that some viewers commented that the drama was boring.

will be honest here too, as i normally am. and in fact, i’d already told the gals whom i was watching the drama earlier how i had felt. i think as fans, we would think that the first epi was alright, and that it was interesting enough. why? coz we’d seen quite a fair bit of wuri hyun joong and he looked gorgeous as always!

but personally i think the first epi was not ‘story-ful’ enough. serious!! that were the exact words i’d used earlier tonight. in SP501‘s words, as she was trying to decipher what i was getting it, she asked if i had meant it had lacked depth. well, yes, in a way, but not exactly. i guess i felt the storytelling was quite flat and not interesting enough for a first epi.

now to me, a first epi is important as it could determine if viewers continued to tune in for the next epi, and considering what else was airing on the other TV stations. traditionally, it’s been known that a significant portion of TV viewers were from the middled-aged population, and they would be more inclined towards the period dramas and also more ‘story-ful’ dramas like The King of Baking. for dramas like My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox and even for Playful Kiss, they’re going more for the younger generation, who may not watch as much TV.

or… even if they did, they may not win the battle for the TV remote control at home, and may turn to the internet to watch online, or to watch later.

but but but… i also heard the official ratings would be released only tomorrow (thu), so i can’t be sure how ‘official and accurate’ the above ratings are. i’m not familiar with the MBC site, and i’m also not a k-drama addict and don’t typically follow dramas real time like this. so whether the ratings above were the final numbers or not, i really don’t know. i did read on the chinese sites that these numbers are released as the dramas were being aired real-time and not exactly the final numbers tabulated.

so let’s just wait awhile and see what happens tomorrow, k?

and oh, they did air the trailer for tomorrow’s epi, and i think it does look a little more interesting and keke, ‘story-ful’. here, have a look.

also, i believe some of you may be curious about how TV RATINGS work. now i can’t say i’m an expert and i also don’t know how much things have changed, but i did do a blog post on TV ratings back in late 2007 when i was watching TWSSG online. do click HERE to read if you’re interested.

and… on a lighter and more personal note, wanna share some pics that we’d taken for tonight^^

the food! MAY was kind enough to pop by ION to get us those oh-so-loved and oh-so-lovely 4FINGERS korean-style fried chicken! there’s also tofu salad, fries, old chang kee, and also pita and sausages that SP501 had kindly prepared for our growling tums!

we had some trouble hooking up on mac and wasn’t able to play it on the TV screen, so ended up watching the drama from my notebook. hee, we’d placed the notebook on the sofa and we gals sat on the floor instead! guess you could easily tell our priorities, ya? of course, he had to be at a more comfortable position than us, wakakakaka!

saw how we’d opened up more than one screen?

in fact, i had nine screens running simultaneously at first, coz i was trying out to see what worked best. eventually, TVants won and i closed all except these two TVants channels. gotta thank that blogder from LIEZLE‘s blog who gave us the server tip!

we had wine!

that’s not all! we had maekgeolli too! and I LOVE MAKGEOLLI!

cheers, everyone!

one last one before i go, hehe! i was wearing the limited edition tee from jung min’s shop tonight, wakakakakaka! thanks, agnes! thanks, honeyeee! (and liezle, if you’re reading this, your tee’s still with me!)

oh, oh, one more (last one, really!) random pic before i go… there’s a really cute wall clock at the gal’s home where we’d gone to watch the drama at!

till later!

    Hi pink princess,
I posted my comments about the 1st epi in the forum so won’t repeat them here. I think we think similar on some points. Suffice it to say that I think that the food you shared while watching the epi looks far more interesting than the episode itself. (:
    Cheers!

Sorry I wasn’t able to join u ladies for the lovely time with those yummilicious food! But hey….I found a ‘treasure’ hidden away by hubby and it’s all thanks to Naughty Kiss!!! I had fun watching with my kids and son was making loads of comments – comparing btw twn and kor version! He especially liked Hani’s vending machine high kick!
In that note, I had to ‘kick’ them out of the room to take a call! So me didn’t get to watch the end of the episode!
My take is that it’s too early to tell so let’s just watch for tonight’s epsiode!!!!

Whether he has improved or not in his acting, as fans we will still support him and watch the whole series, afterall he’s the eye-candy.
However supportive and what we think are not as important and nothing as compared to their TV ratings. The only help that can change anything is the audience and fans in S Korea.
Let’s hope that the ratings will go up in the following weeks or else it will be quite demoralising to the entire production crew.
    HJ’s career is at stake!
