FALLEN FOR A ST★R

hehe, i’m one of those ‘weird’ BYJ fans who don’t know much about korean entertainment stuff.

for one, i hardly even watch TV, not to mention watch k-dramas.  well, i do watch the occasional ones, especially when there’re those that everyone swears by, and that everyone insists that everyone else watches. so i’ve watched lovers in paris, full house, kim sam soon, goong, coffee prince…. and errr… not much else, hehe!

i bought alot of k-drama DVDs though, and sad to say that many are still shrink-wrapped and unopened after months, or even years. at one point, my friends were teasing me that my hobby was not watching DVDs, but collecting them. and for those that i did attempt to watch, i didn’t finish watching the entire series. (yea, yea, i must be one of the rare leader fans who didn’t finish watching BOF….)


k-music? that’s worse, in that my contact with this is even less than that of k-dramas.

many people are surprised. and i’ve often wondered why. i mean, just because i’m a bae-fan doesn’t mean i embrace and watch all things korean, you know…. but hee, i do read enough to ‘bluff’ my way through alittle bit, just a teeny weeny bit.


but but but, since my little obsession with leader began earlier this year, it’s like a whirlwind of accelerated learning! not only do i have to get familiar with k-pop, the awards, the this-this-that-that, suddenly i find myself having to grapple with korean variety programs!

gotta say pre-leader days, i had absolutely no idea at all how vibrant and competitive this aspect of showbiz is in the korean circuit.  and pre-leader days, i didn’t know how entertaining and hilariously funny korean variety programs are. also, little did i expect that even the A-listers of the k-pop musicians and artists too make appearances on such programs.


(i guess in a way, being a bae-fan is a very special thing, in that we’re incredibly sheltered and isolated. you see, wuri yong joon’s terribly private and abit of a recluse, so he hardly mixes around with other actors and stuff. and since eons ago, he’s never made appearances on variety programs or talk shows in korea. nay, despite what everyone says, he ain’t a snob. in the beginning, he was just uncertain that his personality would be able to allow him to entertain and captivate the audience. for talkshows, he didn’t think he had enough depth, knowledge and experience within him to make meaningful contribution.

as humble as he was (and still is), he’s still very much misunderstood by the majority of the media as being arrogant, snobbish and near-impossible to secure interviews with. in fact, he’s so ‘famous’ for being reluctant to appear in variety programs, talkshows and media interviews that people from the trade would say this to newbies or artists who turn down such invitations, ‘do you think you’re bae yong joon?!’…)


so then, in my past eight years (GASP!) of being a bae-fan, i had no reason to tune in to any variety programs or talkshows… but now, months into my leader-obsession, though i still ain’t familiar enough, but i definitely know alot more now than i did before.

i can even rattle off some for you…. x-man, star golden bell, strong heart, chocolate, sixth sense, family outing, happy together, YSMM, infinity challenge, sang sang plus, etc… and hey, i even know of the weekly music shows! like SBS’ inkigayo, MBC’s music core and KBS’ music bank!

oh boy, even the princess is proud of herself!


oh dear, once again, my opening’s soooooo… long-winded that i’ve nearly forgotten what i was gonna blog about!! ah, thank goodness i’d the good sense to write the subject in the post title. it reads: golden fishery 황금어장

gotta say i’d never ever heard of it until leader. the first time i heard it, i was totally bewildered. i mean, what kind of people or TV station would name a variety program golden fishery? and mind you, it’s got absolutely nothing to do with gold or fish or fishing at all!

and oh, did you know that it’s a really old one? i mean, it’s kindda uncommon for variety programs to last and last. just like nightclubs and pubs, they usually need a renovation, brand rejuvenation, or heck, total overhaul every few years. but this one started back in mid 2006, and it’s still running!

not that it hasn’t seen a change of format. anyway, the current show format apparently has got two main segments. the first segment 무릎팍 도사 translates literally into knee guru. nope, i ain’t kidding you! apparently, kang ho dong acts as a shaman (aka kneecap guru, or knee shaman, or knee-drop god…) in this segment that sees him trying to solve solutions in the various scenario being acted out.

the second segment is radio star 라디오스타, and this has been quite popular for sometime already. basically it’s a talkshow of sorts whereby different artists are invited every week. depending on the artists, sometimes rather shocking revelations are shared, and sometimes heartfelt and honest confessions are made too.

anyway, leader and his members recorded for radio star last wednesday, late night (25th nov). yea, all five of them were on the show. here are some pics released by MBC ahead of the program, slated to air tomorrow at 11:05pm, korean time. (hee, so technically it would be thursday for us already!)
